Beyond hegemonic notions of “rurality”:
On the historical trajectories of invisibilized forms of labor and migration in the Bregenzerwald

This project explores waged manufacturing forms of labor in the Bregenzerwald, delivered to the Austro-Swiss textile industry and its globe-spanning commodity chains through homework schemes from the 19th century onwards. Further, it pulls together what little strings I could find to trace differently categorized mobile workers and the migration regimes that brought them to the region throughout shifting historical conjunctures.

I thus show that the visibilization of labor and workers does not necessarily come with wage, but instead both waged and unwaged forms of labor might be subjected to processes of invisibilization, which cut across multiple forms of labor and their locations, beyond households and the female household worker. Moreover, these processes affect migrant and citizen workers alike. Through this perspective, I situate my thesis historically.
